Couples Therapy
Healthy committed relationships are a source of tremendous joy and meaning in our lives. The reported feelings of love and connection from partners within healthy committed relationships are shown to improve mental and physical health. Thus, when difficulties arise within your relationship it is not surprising that there is a negative impact on your overall well-being. Couples therapy is an invaluable resource that not only addresses the health of the relationship, but also directly involves the health of the individuals within the relationship.
Why go to Couples Therapy?
There are common myths about couples therapy that prevent people from seeking it out, such as the idea that it’s a “red flag” if you go to couples therapy before you are engaged or married. This simply is not true—couples therapy is helpful at any stage of a committed relationship. In fact, the sooner you acknowledge the problems you are having, the easier it is to assess and work through negative behavioral patterns within your relationship.
Common reasons to attend therapy with your partner include:
- Frequent miscommunication and conflict
- Sexual problems
- Premarital counseling
- Deciding if this is the right relationship for you
- Adjusting to major life transitions
- Navigating difficult family situations
What To Expect
Treatment begins with 1-2 initial sessions dedicated to gathering relevant information about each individual and their relationship struggles that is then used to develop a treatment plan tailored to the couples’ unique needs. Dr. Katie Strickland draws from the leading evidence-based methods including but not limited to Cognitive-Behavioral Couples Therapy, Gottman Method Couples Therapy, and Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy. Treatment often involves exploring and repairing unresolved hurts and resentments, increasing emotional connection, improving intimacy, and building and practicing healthy communication skills.
At Cambridge Psychology Group we welcome and embrace couples with differences of race, ethnicity, age, marital status, sexual orientation, gender identity, and other characteristics that make people diverse. Wherever you are at in your journey, our couples therapist, Dr. Katie Strickland, will help guide you.
