Perinatal Mental Health and Early Parenthood
Perinatal Mental Health and Early Parenthood
Offering evidence-based therapy in-person and via telehealth to support new parents.
Becoming a parent is an incredibly rewarding yet challenging experience. The transition to parenthood—whether through pregnancy, birth, or adoption—brings profound shifts across every area of your life. You might find yourself navigating shifting relationship dynamics, discovering new aspects of your identity, or balancing professional and family demands in ways you never anticipated. While these changes are a normal part of becoming a parent, the emotional weight of this transition can feel overwhelming.
During the perinatal period—which spans from pregnancy through the first year after giving birth—many people experience an intensification of mental health challenges. For instance, it’s estimated that approximately one in seven birthing parents and one in ten non-birthing parents may experience depression during this time.
If you have a history of mental health difficulties, you may worry that these will persist or worsen during pregnancy or postpartum. On the other hand, perhaps you or your partner recently gave birth or adopted a child, and you’re experiencing an increase in difficult thoughts and feelings that took you by surprise. Or maybe you’re struggling with aspects of parenthood that feel isolating or hard to name. We’re here to provide evidence-based support for you if these or other challenges arise during your transition to parenthood.
